Island Hopping - Honda Bay
One of the itineraries that you can do in Palawan is to go island hopping in Honda Bay. The islands that we went to was Pandan, Snake, Starfish and Luli Island.
You can see different types of fish in Pandan Island but there are a lot of sea urchins too! I wasn’t able to take pictures because I hate sea urchins! Just to give you an idea, it looks like this:
They may be intimidating because they look like pin cushions but its roe is a delicacy in Japan! They even eat them raw!! eeewwww…Thinking of it gives me the goosebumps!
Only in Snake Island where I’ve seen a lot of fishes that are a few steps from the shore! You don’t have to snorkel just to see them because they are already visible from above!
TIP: Don’t forget to bring a piece of bread with you so that you have something to give to these fishes. Bread is also available from the port before you go island hopping.
When we arrived in Starfish island, there were no starfishes around! So I asked our boatman where did all the starfish go?! He immediately got out of our boat and looked for starfishes.
After a few minutes, He gave us these… Ever wondered why you never see a starfish with their ventral face on top? This is because they always try to flip back to their original position (ventral face on the sand). They move so slowly, you will barely notice them moving. You will just be surprised that their body is already bent like the pics below. They possess a hydraulic water vascular system (tube feet) which functions in their locomotion and aid in feeding.
The pictures below is Luli Island. Luli is short for lulubog-lilitaw, in English, it is sink and rise. It is called as such because you can only see the sand bar if it’s low tide. We didn’t dock on this island because it’s getting a bit late and we need to get back to the port.
